More Than A Couch

Couchsurfers and hosts alike deserve respect—not only in their interactions with one another but also in upholding the integrity of the Couchsurfing philosophy. At its core, Couchsurfing is about cultural exchange, trust, and generosity. Surfers– are travelers of the world who choose to move at the rhythm of life, taking chances with each person and place they meet. Within these parabolas, hosts from around the world offer their homes as landing spots for surfers along their travel trails. Encouraging them to continue chasing their dreams of exploration and freedom; with a free pillow and couch to sleep on. The relationships they acquire through this shared experience can be gratifying. Foraging memories of great connection and mutual aid they’ll both cherish for life.

However, this isn’t always the case. For female travelers, the risk-to-reward ratio tends to skew towards risks from the start. In general, male travelers tend to dominate online Couchsurfing communities. Thus, making it harder for female travelers concerned about threats of danger and compromised safety to surf confidently. But it still can be done. Women worldwide have created new platforms entirely, to be used as resources for women by women. Apps like Travel Ladies and online community groups on Facebook, make this possible. Each creates safer spaces and peace of mind for female travelers everywhere. I can attest to this. My first couchsurfing experience was made through the Travel Ladies app. Where I found one of the safest couches in NYC for female travelers with Eliza.

I came across the concept of Couchsurfing when I was solo in Spain and in a pinch to return to NYC. I had no place to stay once I arrived and needed to find one for that same weekend. At first, I thought that the risk-to-reward ratio wouldn’t be worth it. Most of the hosts were male and it was imperative to find a female host instead. I found Travel Ladies and a wash of relief flooded over me. Then, another fork in the road emerged, I had no references. References are a way for hosts to feel more confident in the legitimacy of a surfer. I understood this, but my heart sank anyway. I was growing more anxious to find a spot to stay so I decided to take a chance on it. I created my profile, sent a post out to the NYC group, and hoped someone would take the chance on me too. A few hours passed by before my phone lit up with a message from Eliza, marking the beginning of an amazing experience.

My time with Eliza far exceeded my expectations. She’s not just a lady with an empty couch. She’s a woman of great character, generosity, and hospitality. A gracious woman led by the teachings of her mother that permeate through her innately. Even before I met her in person I could tell this about her. And once I did, her kindness was unparalleled and her dedication to her goals was admirable. She’s the host of a surfer's dreams and a genuine open hand to those in need. She’s a cook, providing delicious meals at any time of the day, she’s attentive to her surfers and cares about their wellbeing, she’s a mother with much empathy and patience, and an entrepreneur with great resilience and problem-solving. It’s a no-brainer to name her couch the safest couch in NYC. She’s a spectacular host and an even better person to have in your life, even if it's only for a short while.

Eliza exemplifies the core values of Couchsurfing: trust, generosity, and respect. She is committed to ensuring her guests feel at ease. She’s a great guide for the city but is flexible if you prefer to venture solo. Her kindness and understanding towards her surfers run deep. By respecting her space and being a genuine person yourself, you’re assured a positive and memorable stay. In the future, she envisions a larger home where she can host more female travelers, continuing her mission to be a safe haven for women traveling to NYC. Her dedication to building a reputation as a trusted host is evident in every interaction, from her warm hospitality to her delicious, authentic Dominican dishes that nourish both the heart and soul.

Ultimately, people like Eliza are the heartbeat of the Couchsurfing community. Her kindness and generosity have inspired me to one day pay it forward by opening my own home to travelers. There’s something undeniably beautiful and untamed about a community built on trust and shared experiences. If you haven’t tried Couchsurfing yet, I wholeheartedly encourage you to —you never know what incredible connections and memories await.
